E-Business:
Using the Internet and technology to communicate within the
organization, and with customers, suppliers, and trading partners. E-business can be as simple as using e-mail to communicate
within an organization, or as complex as operating a fully automated e-commerce
web site, with integrated marketing, research, sales, production and shipping
processes.
E-Commerce:
More specifically, e-commerce means buying and selling goods and
services through the Internet. E-tailers are online retailers.
Encryption: The
encoding of data so that only the desired recipients can decode it. It provides
protection when transmitting sensitive data such as credit card numbers over the
Internet.
EFT: Electronic
fund transfer. Moving money between accounts electronically.
SET: Secure electronic transactions. A standard for safe e-commerce
developed by Visa, MasterCard and others.
SSL: Secure
Sockets Layer. Protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents
via the Internet. Web pages that
require a SSL connection have addresses starting with https: instead of http:.
Digital
Certificate: An attachment to
an electronic message used for security purposes. The most common use of a
digital certificate is to verify that a user sending a message is who he or she
claims to be, and to provide the receiver with the means to encode a reply.
Internet
Merchant ID: Issued when
Internet credit card merchant status is granted, before a company can accept
credit card payments over the Internet. In
Canada, each bank handles only one type of credit card. To accept more than one
type, an e-tailer must set up accounts at several banks, or else go through a
“one-stop-shop” provider.
such as Psigate
